History

The Energy Group Company, Inc (TEG) was established in 1988 by founders Kelly Needles and Les Wilson to serve institutional clients in Iowa. Hospitals, colleges, and educational facilities sought the expertise of TEG to develop comprehensive energy management plans as a way to lower operational costs. In the 1990s TEG applied the concept of energy management to the community model, helping local governments leverage energy efficiency to improve vitality and aid economic development. This process was so successful that our work gained recognition for leadership in the areas of energy efficiency and conservation.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources awarded TEG the Energy Leadership Award for our energy efficiency work with the city of Charles city in 1996. Again in 1998 TEG was awarded the Energy Leadership Award for our work with Webster City. That same year we earned the United States Department of Energy “Rebuild America Partnership of the Year Award”.

More recently, our client Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) has been recognized for their exemplary energy management program. In 2011 the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Top Overall Energy Performance award was given to DMPS. And each year since 2012 DMPS has been a recipient of the Energy Star Partner of the Year award.

We’ve worked diligently the last two decades to expand our services and develop tools in order to translate our success with institutional clients to the utility, agriculture, and residential sectors. We now specialize in a variety of energy and utility-based services in all sectors.

Sustainability Commitment

In 2011 TEG participated in a sustainability initiative with Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie, RDG Planning & Design, Principal Financial Group, and other local business in Des Moines, IA. Through this exercise our team learned how to be good environmental stewards in all aspects of our day-to-day business. We evaluated our use of resources in the office and on the road, our purchasing decisions, and how we do business with our customers. We committed to operating more sustainably and formed a Sustainability Committee to drive this effort forward. To date we have minimized our paper towel waste stream, mitigated bottled water consumption, and limited our use of virgin paper and ink. We define sustainability as utilizing business practices that improve our economy and environment, while minimizing our impact on tomorrow’s world. Our commitment is to lead by example. Through the adoption of sustainable practices, we demonstrate that a business can be both sustainable and profitable.
