Lowering Energy Bills Saves The Planet.

Are your walls and ceilings at the recommendation levels of insulation?. If they are not, updating your insulation can save on your energy bills and save on CO2 from 140 to 2100 pounds per year. Also, people in the colder climates can produce up to 5.5 tons of CO2 from natural gas, 8.8 tons of CO2 for oil, and 23 tons of CO2 from electric heaters. Weatherizing your home with heat shrink plastic can save 1100 pounds of CO2 emissions per year. Affordable Multifamily Property Projects – East View Manor

The Energy Group recently installed free energy efficiency items at East View Manor, a senior, affordable multifamily property managed by the City of Des Moines. The energy saving items were provided and installed for free as part of the energy efficiency program for affordable multifamily housing. The program, sponsored by Alliant Energy, Black Hills Energy and MidAmerican Energy Company, also offers enhanced rebates for energy efficient projects such as heating, cooling, windows, insulation, and additional lighting updates. City of Ames Smart 150 Challenge

The City of Ames is using their city’s sesquicentennial to reiterate their commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability through a new program. TEG to Assist Dubuque’s GHG Reduction Plan

Have you heard of Green Dubuque? It is a volunteer-led, 501(c)3 non-profit formed in 2007 to serve the Dubuque region. These cats are focused on clean air and water, social equity, climate action, and energy efficiency (among other relevant issues). They’ve set an ambitious goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in their community 50% by 2030! They aim to achieve this goal, not through regulation, but through “no regret solutions” which, regardless of the severity of climate change or who’s to blame, will positively impact the community and environment. Birthday & Energy Efficiency at Botanical Center

Today we celebrate the birthdays of Emily Rice and Abraham Lincoln. In an attempt to bring summer to February, TEG staff grabbed their tropical shirts and headed down to the Botanical Center in Des Moines for lunch. If you haven’t been, you should go. And if you haven’t been recently, you should go back. They recently remodeled and have a wonderful plant-inspired menu, beautiful gardens, and 84 degree balmy weather! IAMU 2014 Leadership Conference

TEG attended the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) Leadership Conference in Des Moines, IA last week. IAMU is a member-driven organization that serves Iowa’s municipal utilities and their interests. Each year they invite their members, vendors, and industry leaders to this event for state regulatory, legislative and policy updates. They recognize leaders with the Energy Efficiency Leadership Awards as well as conduct committee and business meetings. 2013 Earth Day Trash Bash

Last month, The Energy Group participated in the 2013 Earth Day Trash Bash created and run by the City of Des Moines Park and Recreation Department.  The annual event is an ever growing effort to clean up streets and parks around the Des Moines Metro Area.  This year, over 1,400 volunteers braved the cold, windy day to participate in the citywide cleanup.  With the record number of participants, over 24,000 pounds of litter, brush & recyclables were removed from Des Moines parks and waterways.  The Principal Financial Group won the “Big Buttowski” Award of the event by picking up the […]

Recent REAP Program Development

For a short time, $60 million is available through the REAP Program during FY 2013!  The available amount is $40 million more than expected because the 2013 Appropriation Bill did not include specific language preventing the remaining funds provided by the 2008 Farm Bill to be used.  These additional funds are three times the amount originally expected.  With these increased funds, the application deadline for requesting grants, including feasibility study grants, and combination loan and grant will be extended from April 30th, 2013 to May 31st, 2013.
