Iowa Bills Bolster Renewable Energy Industry

The bipartisan bill SF 2340, which passed “without any opposition”, increases the annual limit for the existing Solar Energy System Tax Credit from $1.5 million to $4.5 million, retroactive to January 1, 2014. In addition, the bill provides that if the annual credit cap is not fully utilized in one year, the unused credits remain available in a future year, state fiscal analysts said. This bill allows a taxpayer to claim an Iowa credit equal to 60 percent of the federal solar energy tax credit instead of the 50 percent currently allowed. TEG to Assist Dubuque’s GHG Reduction Plan

Have you heard of Green Dubuque? It is a volunteer-led, 501(c)3 non-profit formed in 2007 to serve the Dubuque region. These cats are focused on clean air and water, social equity, climate action, and energy efficiency (among other relevant issues). They’ve set an ambitious goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in their community 50% by 2030! They aim to achieve this goal, not through regulation, but through “no regret solutions” which, regardless of the severity of climate change or who’s to blame, will positively impact the community and environment. TEG Adds Alternative Energy Analysis to Portfolio

The Energy Group is pleased to announce the most recent addition to our suite of energy efficiency services: analysis and feasibility studies for alternative energy projects. Our team is using National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) methodology to assess a variety of alternative energy projects; solar photovoltaic, conventional thermal, wind energy, biomass, and biogas. New Addition to TEG

The Energy Group has added a new member to our staff!  Kate Kennedy started this month as our Energy Analyst Intern.  She will primarily be helping us run the City of Ames Residential Energy Audit program.  Kate will be assisting with residential energy audits and blower door tests.  She is currently a senior at Iowa State University studying Mechanical Engineering and spent the previous year with the Industrial Assessment Center Program (IAC) at Iowa State University. Funding Available for Rural Programs & Projects

During FY 2014 91 million dollars will be available for loans and 10 million dollars available for grants through the Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant (REDLG) program. This program enables revolving loan funds, managed through local rural utilities, to fund and assist with projects that will stimulate the local economy. City of Ames Energy Efficiency Programs

Earlier this year The Energy Group was awarded the contract to perform energy audits for the City of Ames Residential Program. These audits are intended to help customers identify energy savings opportunities in their homes as well as assist with the rebate process for applicable projects. Homes built prior to 2000 will receive a blower door test as part of the audit.  To sign up, Ames Residential customers can sign up online. USDA NCAH Green Team Sustainability Fair

In late April, Chad and Jesse represented The Energy Group at the USDA National Center for Animal Health (NCAH) Green Team Sustainability Fair in Ames, Iowa.  The purpose of the fair was to promote local sustainability and “green” companies to USDA employees.  Exhibitors ranged from the City of Ames and Boone County Landfills to local food coops.  The official mission of the NCAH Green Team is “to assist the NCAH Board of Directors in promoting environmental stewardship at NCAH through increased awareness, continuous improvement and employee participation”.  During the fair The Energy Group helped educate employees about energy efficiency programs […]

2013 Earth Day Trash Bash

Last month, The Energy Group participated in the 2013 Earth Day Trash Bash created and run by the City of Des Moines Park and Recreation Department.  The annual event is an ever growing effort to clean up streets and parks around the Des Moines Metro Area.  This year, over 1,400 volunteers braved the cold, windy day to participate in the citywide cleanup.  With the record number of participants, over 24,000 pounds of litter, brush & recyclables were removed from Des Moines parks and waterways.  The Principal Financial Group won the “Big Buttowski” Award of the event by picking up the […]
