Anatomy of an Ames Energy Audit

By Jesse on 27th August 2014

Did you know that TEG provides free home energy audits for City of Ames residents? Here’s what you can expect from a typical residential energy audit.   The audit process involves two things: the site visit and the report. The site visit takes around an hour to complete. During the site visit the air conditioner, furnace, water heater, large appliances, insulation, lighting, and building shell are inspected and information is gathered on them (model/serial numbers, etc.)   A blower door test is also run for homes that were built around or before the year 2000. By Jesse on 27th August 2014

Last week, The Energy Group visited Bellevue, NE for the 2017 Kinseth Hospitality Trade Show. Throughout the morning, we got to converse with other vendors before the main trade show began. TEG staff members Emily, Candace, and myself had the pleasure of meeting and talking with all the Kinseth hotel managers along with some members of the leadership team, including Bruce and Gary Kinseth.   Everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming, and interested in what we could do to help them save money on utility costs. We answered many great, insightful questions. A few of those interested in energy efficiency [...]

TEG Visits Adventure Lighting

By Jesse on 27th August 2014

A recent venture to Adventure Lighting, a local lighting vendor, shed new light (pun intended) on the emerging world of LED lighting and controls. A staggering amount of coal and natural gas is burned every day to supply light to empty spaces. Whether we are looking at empty corridors, parking lots, or offices, the savings potential of replacing legacy lighting with LED and using controls are considerable, as is the electricity and dollars wasted by not pursuing energy efficiency.   The first thing shown to the TEG crew was the increasingly popular linear LED tube lamp, which is quickly [...]

The Super Bowl and Energy Efficiency

By Jesse on 27th August 2014

Super Bowl LI is this Sunday! Whether you’re a Patriots fan or a Falcons fan, chances are you’re either holding a Super Bowl party or attending one hosted by friends or family. With so many people tuning in, you may think that energy usage spikes during this time- but in reality, it actually drops! How does this work? According to the National Center for Policy Analysis, this drop in energy use occurs precisely because of the number of people who hold or attend Super Bowl parties. Say you’re attending a watch party with seven other people. Only one TV is [...]

Groundhog Day Energy PSA

By Jesse on 27th August 2014

Happy Groundhog Day!   America’s famous rodent, Punxsutawney Phil, has predicted that we have an extra six weeks of winter to go. If you haven’t taken a look at your furnace’s air filter this season, now is the perfect time to do so! A clogged filter can raise your heating bill, lower air quality, and even cause your furnace to break down, which can lead to expensive repairs. Replacing a filter is a quick, easy and inexpensive way to improve the energy efficiency of your home or facility and improve your quality of life.
